About the Band…

Rooted in the heart of West Michigan, Red Thyme is a dynamic bluegrass band steeped in tradition yet unafraid to explore the boundaries of the genre. Hailing from Grand Rapids, this five-piece string outfit delivers tight harmonies, masterful musicianship, and an authentic stage presence that has made them a rising name in the Midwest acoustic scene.

Fronted by Hals Smedstad (lead vocals and guitar) and Jeremiah Wenger (guitar), the band also features Jeff Valensky on upright bass, Tyler Littleton on mandolin, and Austin Benzing on banjo. Together, they bring a cohesive sound defined by rich vocal harmonies and sharp instrumental interplay.

Known for their seamless musical chemistry and compelling live performances, Red Thyme brings together the soulful grit of traditional bluegrass with fresh, modern sensibilities. Their sound weaves together the twang of high-lonesome harmonies, the drive of old-time picking, and the nuance of contemporary folk storytelling—creating a sonic experience that feels both comfortably familiar and refreshingly original.

A hallmark of Red Thyme’s success is their proven ability to play in step with nationally touring acts, having shared stages and provided local support for artists such as Armchair Boogie, Lindsay Lou, Rachel Davis, JigJam, and more. These opportunities have not only honed the band’s live performances but also affirmed their place as trusted collaborators within the broader roots and Americana community.

In August 2025, Red Thyme completed a highly successful East Coast tour, playing to enthusiastic crowds from Harpers Ferry, WV to Charleston, SC. Sharing their music with hundreds across historic venues and vibrant listening rooms, the tour marked a major milestone for the band and showcased their ability to connect with audiences far beyond their Michigan home.

Whether in intimate listening rooms or on high-energy festival stages, Red Thyme brings an intuitive musicality that can only come from deep mutual respect and a shared commitment to the craft. Their arrangements are rich with interlocking instrumentation and soaring vocal blends, showcasing an ensemble that listens as they lead. Each member contributes a unique voice to the mix, but it's their harmony—both musically and personally—that sets them apart.

With new recordings in the works and a growing fan base stretching beyond the Midwest, Red Thyme is poised to continue their ascent. Whether you're a steward of tradition or a curious newcomer, their music invites you to pull up a chair and stay a while.
